Tips for debugging the bad credentials warning message
- First, make sure that your credentials are really correct. Honestly, try it a few times because we all make mistakes when we type usernames and passwords on tiny Mobile devices.
- Does your Mobile device require a proxy to sign on to the internet? This could be causing the issue. GMobileSync will support proxy authentication in version 1.4 (check out the development road map).
- Try using both your full email address as your username and just the first half (before the @ ). Technically, both will work but for the sake of being thorough try both. For example, if your email address was sanfrancisco2007@gmail.com try using both sanfrancisco2007 and sanfrancisco2007@gmail.com as your username. Your password will be the same no matter which username you use.
- Finally, try to access the feed for your Google Calendar directly in a browser window. Click on this link: http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/default/private/full and it should prompt your for your Google Account username and password. If you can’t login to that page (which will show an XML listing of your appointments) then you won’t be able to use GMobileSync. If this is the case then please leave a comment here because something is very strange and I would love to talk to you about debugging this issue!
*Note, if you’re already logged into any Google service then that link will automatically show up and not ask you for credentials. Try logging out of GMail, Google Calendar and clicking the link. Then, it will require authentication.
If anyone has any other ideas or solutions that have worked for them, please let everyone know by leaving a comment. Thanks!
Hi Eric, Just tried 3 of four steps to get gmail to work, including accessing the web page in the browser. (message: this file cannot be viewed on this device) To finish all four steps do I need to download something for step 2, a different version perhaps? Thanks for all your time and effort.
Hi Erik,
Does your device use a proxy to access the internet? That’s the only thing I can think of that would cause the bad credential issue. Let me know–
I experienced this issue a few times, but if I retried it usually worked without making any changes. Might be an issue on Google’s end.
Hi,
I wrote some code to access google calendar with Compact Framework 2.0.
Some day my user and I had a problem with credentials.
Few days later, my user reported a solution.
Format device and re-install everything.
I tried restore from backup, and It makes good.
I think that CF2.0 makes some credeitial problem…
Thanks for the reply Eric,
And, pardon my ignorance, but I know what a proxy is but have no idea how to tell if I am using one? (I have a Verizon Q ) Thanks again, hoping to get to the bottom of this!
I hate to say this but I thing these guys beat you to the punch.

Don’t let Bill get you down. I’ve looked into OggSync and have even installed it and tried it out. I prefer what you have so far to their’s, despite the feature advantage their freeware offers over your 1.2. Keep up the good work.
Hi Bill,
Why don’t you give GMobileSync a try and see what you think?
Thanks for the compliment, Joey! GMobileSync has, and always will be, free. OggSync has not always been a free solution.
Hi Erik,
A proxy is what allows you to access the internet. Sometimes a network connected device (be it a Mobile device or a computer) can only access the internet or other network resources by connecting to a middleman first. There’s a much better explanation as to what a proxy is and how it works here on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server
Oh, and were you able to access this page in your web browser: http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/default/private/full
We’ll get this figured out
Hi Eric,
No success with the link to google. States “this file cannot be viewed on the device”. Thoughts? Probably going something obvious.
Hi Erik,
If you do it on your desktop computer, do you get the same result? It should show you an XML file containing all of your events. Does it at least prompt you for a username and password?
Hi Eric,
Able to look at the XML file on the desktop without a problem. Able to look at random web pages on the Q, but not able to look at the xml file? Not even asked for username or password. Same error message as above. What would prevent the display of the xml file? Thanks again, hope we can figure this out!
It seems that passwords containing an ampersand (&) may pose a problem.
Follow this thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/gmobilesync/browse_thread/thread/52c613ac3d89739d/3b69f3a223465021?lnk=gst&q=ampersand&rnum=1#
(Click “Expand all”)
Try passwords without ampersands.
Cheers,
gatomalo
Google authentication must be URLencoded.
My code is below.
public static void UrlEncode(String str, ref String outStr)
{
const String param = “‘.-*)(_”;
outStr = “”;
for (int i = 0; i
Hello. I tried using your app. I am also getting the credential problem. When I open that link I get an RSS feed (when signed in). Otherwise I get a message saying I need to be authenticated, but not given the option to sign in. I am currently using OggSync but would like to switch back if you figure out whats wrong. Keep up the good work!
I too am getting the credentials warning message and the message: “this file cannot be viewed on this device” when attempting to view the page “http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/default/private/full ” on my Moto Q. i am able to view the page on my PC, i have verified several times my user name and pw. (i am receiving my gmail emails on the phone). i have Microsoft.Net CF 2.0 installed (not sure if this matters saw it in a post above). i don’t use a proxy to access the internet and i am available to view other web pages. and not sure is this applies either but i do have an @ symbol in my pw. (which i tried to changing and the pw without symbols didn’t work either). i was able to install oggsync and was able to sync calenders, but i really want to try your app. any ideas?
“Click on this link: http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/default/private/full and it should prompt your for your Google Account username and password”
On desktop pc I tried both with Firefox and MicrosoftInternetExplorer.
First attempt opens without asking my password.
Then found that Google Calendar had kept me logged in….so I logged out.
Then tried to open again. and received this: “Authorization Required” “Error 401″
On PPC6700 (with ultra tricked out ROM 3.5.4sp1) upon sync I receive this message:
“Unexpected error” “PocketOutlook or one of it’s dependencies was not found”
Then I asked for helped. Received POutlook dll files and placed them all in the GMobileSync directory.
Then same error repeats.
——————————————————————————————————-
Thoughts/complications-
My first impression was that the error was due to the modified configurations of my specific 6700.
Oggsync also does not work and gives similar error.
My Google Calendar is setup like this….
Default “My Calendars” (has nothing in it)
Along with “Other Calendars”
The “Other Calendars” is actually a feed from 6 calendars consolidated into this one Google Calendar.
——————————————————————————————————–
So there you have it. I tried to write this as simple yet thorough as possible, but let me know if anything else might be of benefit.
I tried to do the sync via activesync and strated etherreal to get a tcpdump of what is happening.
According to etherreal, I have my pda that is sendin a malformed packet.
dump that can be opened with ethereal is available at http://couplet.be/temp/gmobilesync.cap
I am using WM6 on HTC tytn : vi black 1.2 (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WM_VI_Black_ROMs)
any idea ?
Thanks,
Herve
I’ve tried both your product and Oggsync, and I prefer the simplicity of yours. But a problem just came up with the credentials. I synced my HTC620 Friday morning and everything was fine, went to work made some calendar changes attempted to sync again, no luck. Connection problems, tried again and it only downloaded 14 of 34 events (i counted). so i was like WTF? anyway, laer that day tried again, still no luck, this time its the credentials problem and its been the same since. I have no clue what to do now.
and I get an ‘Authorization required’ message from that page but no promt to enter one. I have multiple calendars. 4 under My Calendars and 2 under other.
Ryan,
This is Shawn @ oggsync, I believe there are some google api problems going on with OpenDNS. If you are using OpenDNS, disable it.
(I get alerts on the Oggsync keyword…

I get this problem also - when it asks for credentials I provide them but they are not accepted.my second problem is my proxy server requires authentication. How do I configure the Black Berry Mobile Data Service to support proxy authentication? How will my mobile device act as my proxy and help filter out communications and only pass on communications that I will be interested in?
