GMobileSync Quick Installation Guide

Posted on Tuesday 12 December 2006

Ready to install GMobileSync? It’s a piece of cake.

  1. Download the latest version of GMobileSync (linked on the right side-bar).
  2. Get GMobileSync on to your Mobile 5.0 device
    1. Either copy the installer to your Mobile 5.0 device through your computer (USB, Bluetooth, whatever)
    2. Or download the GMobileSync installer from your Mobile device’s browser
  3. Run GMobileSyncSetup.cab (the cab extension is an installer for Mobile 5.0).
  4. Ta-da, that’s it! Now just run GMobileSync. It will be in your applications directory.

What? You don’t have the .NET 2.0 Compact Framework installed? It’s easy.

  1. Download the proper Framework for your device.
    1. Click here for Windows Mobile 5.0 SmartPhone edition
    2. Click here for Windows Mobile 5.0 CE
  2. Get the Framework installer on to your Mobile 5.0 device
    1. Either copy the installer to your Mobile 5.0 device through your computer (USB, Bluetooth, whatever)
    2. Or download the Framework installer from your Mobile device’s browser
  3. Run the installer.
  4. Reboot your Mobile device.
  5. Now, you can install GMobileSync!

    Thanks for the great app.

However I have some problems running it on my Acer N311 PDA. It’s running Windows Mobile 5 but I can’t install the .NET 2.0 Compact Framework for Windows CE that you posted above. It keeps saying “installation failed” whenever I try to install it.

So I grab the latest .NET 2.0 CF framework from microsoft’s website and it installs successfully. Your app runs fine on my PDA, except that it cannot grab the data even though I’m very sure that I have entered the credentials correctly and I am connected to the internet (tried both via WiFi and ActiveSync internet sharing).

Wish you could help as this app would be really useful to me.

I noticed that the other day that some non-SmartPhones will only accept the SmartPhone version of the .NET 2.0 Compact Framework. I’m not entirely sure why but the solution is easy enough.

What does GMobileSync say? Is it just the “you’re not connected to the internet or your credentials are bad” message?

That’s the error I’m getting; I think I have the same problem. I have the Cingular 8525. I used Microsoft’s general .Net CF 2.0 installer, letting it pick the version to install. Like uzyn, I’ve verified credentials multiple times and have tried with both ActiveSync and the Cingular phone networks - neither works.

Yes eric. That’s the error that I’m getting as well, after GMobileSync attempts to connect for about 5 minutes.

Let me give the Smartphone version of the .NET CF framework and will post my results here.

    Darth,

Did the .NET Compact Framework install properly for you? If so, which version did you use?

    Darren,

Which version of the .NET Compact Framework are you using?

    Vince,

I have a Mobile 2003 device (my old phone) but I am not sure if enough people would be interested in this functionality. Perhaps in a few days, I will test recompiling the code using the older Framework on my other phone. Now that I think about it, most of the code should be portable. Hummm… :-)

I am getting ready to download this app…I’ve tried many others, and I’m still looking for a 2-way sync (that’s what I really need), but if this works, it would get me started (at least I’d know when my upcoming appointments were!).

Thank you for working so hard on this…I’m not sure why Google hasn’t done this yet…

    …oh well….I still love Google!

I’m new at this, but I’ve got the Cingular 8125, and have downloaded the sync program and tried installing both .net compact framework things separately to see which one I needed. Neither one worked. Nothing even happens when I select the “Gmobile Sync” . Do you happen to know why?

I’m a Mac user and an iPaq 5450 user (WM2003). I would like to see a 2003 version if possible. I saw some people are after a 2003SE version, but there are also us 2003 users. Is the code portable back to First Ed too?

Hello everyone with a 2003 or 2003SE device,

I’m going to look into compiling the code on the older framework after GMobileSync 1.3 with two-way sync has been completed. Look for posts in the future about the status.

    Antonio,

Try using your full email address as your username and then just your username as well. It should work with both. Also, of course, make sure you’re typing your password correctly. That message about your credentials comes right from Google, so I don’t have a lot of control over it. Do you have any proxy settings?

Just got your 1.2 and am trying to get it to work on my Treo 750. After it says it is testing the network connection a box pops up and says no netowkr connection was detected… etc etc. So what should I do? I know I am connected, IE has a google page up!

    Hi Sean,

Are you using a proxy to connect to the internet? GMobileSync tires to access the internet by downloading a tiny file. If it can’t get it then GMobileSync doesn’t have network access.

    Hi Eric,

I’ve just installed the app and I’m trying to sync, but I keep getting the error msg ‘Your credentials are incorrect’. Needless to say, I’ve checked my credentials millions of times and also tried username with and without the ‘@gmail.com’ suffix.

I tried the app with both .NET Compact Framework 2.0 and .NET Compact Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0C1B0A88-59E2-4EBA-A70E-4CD851C5FCC4&displaylang=en) but I had no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’d love to be able to use that app

    Thanks

    Zdeno,

I’ve noticed that on some Mobile devices that you have to save the file from the browser and tell it not to open automatically when the download has completed. Open the file manually (after downloaded) and it should work fine. I noticed this on a Sprint SmartPhone.

    Hi Dimitris,

Hummm, that is very strange. It doesn’t seem to be a Framework issue for you. It’s definitely something with GMobileSync and your Google account. Your email address is @gmail.com, right? Can you try going to this URL and tell me if it shows your appointments:

    http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/default/private/full

I am going to make a post about this is a few minutes. A few other people have reported the same issue.

    Thank you for your help!

I have installed the program (1.2), and ran it. I am told that “Synchronization complete!”, but I don’t see any new apts in on my phones calendar. What am I doing wrong?

  30.
    January 28, 2007 | 1:11 pm

    Hi Josh,

Are you sure that you have any appointments in the specified range (in the settings)? GMobileSync would say “synchronization complete” even if there were zero things to sync. Make sure that you’re past and future date ranges are large enough to include some Google Calendar appointments.

Hey eric, excellent app. I have tried contacting you repeatedly about my question, but to no avail:(

Can you please tell me how to make gmobilesync run automatically at so and so interval, or at least tell me the parameter to start it with to sync on startup? That way I can have my other scheduler app run gmobilesync /parameterforautorun
    run once a day.
    thanks!

After installing the .net-Framework 2.0 and GMobileSync, GMobileSync chrashes with the error (sorry, only german translation): “Datei- oder Assemblyname ‘Microsoft. WindowsMobile.PocketOutlook, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35′ bzw. eine Abhängigkeit davon wurde nicht gefunden.”

What can I do against this?

I installed 1.2 and ran it. It “tested network connection”, then “downloading events”, then “saving 1 of 0 events”. Why did it not download my google calendar?

By the way, how does it know which calendar to download if I have more than one? maybe that’s the problem?

I use Google Apps for your Domain for all my email and calendar. For some reason, when I attempt to sync with GMobileSync, it says it connects and downloads my appointments, but the calendar is blank. Similarly, when I go to the google calendar without going to my domain portal, google calendar says that I either have to use my domain portal or create a new account. My question is, will GMobileSync support the Google Apps for your Domain calendar as well as the regular google calendar in a future release? Am I the only one asking for this? Thanks!

    Ok…feeling “dumb like rock”…
I was able to install the cab installer from Microsoft on my Dell Axim X50v (win mobile 5), but can’t seem to install the GMobileSync.

I have Extracted the WAR files to my desktop and moved them (in folder to PDA) when I click on “Set up” it opens XML file.

So, anybody who would like to help me graduate from the Cave Man Ability Group…PLEASE…tell me what I am doing wrong.

Thank you very much for developing this app. I dl the .net framework and gmobilesync setup files just fine. When I synced with Google calendar, the times of the appointments was off… I checked the time settings with my Google account, and it is correct (Pacific Time), as is the time zone on my Blackjack. Any idea why that is? Seems like the sync pushed the hours ahead by 7 hours (for example, I had an appointment at 6:30 PM on Sunday, 7/1/07, and when synced, it was pushed ahead to Monday, 7/2/07 at 1:30 AM, 7 hours ahead. I must have missed some kind of setting. If you could contact me, I woudl appreciate it. Thanks!
